Striped Woven Basket

  • Stunning African natural woven baskets, handwoven by women's co-operatives. These beautiful Fairtrade storage baskets for the home are made using traditional techniques. The reeds used to produce them are often found in riverbeds, but also grown specifically for basket weaving. The leaves are cut, split, dyed and dried before weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations from Grandmother to Granddaughter are used to create them.

  • The Basket Room is an ethical lifestyle brand, specialising in handwoven baskets and accessories made in Africa. They work directly with weaving cooperatives in rural Kenya, Ghana & Zimbabwe to create these versatile and beautiful handwoven baskets. Their main goal is to create access to the market for these talented weavers, to provide them with a sustainable income and the recognition they deserve, whilst preserving an age-old tradition. Many of the weavers rely on subsistence farming, but when crops fail during dry periods, they turn to the art of weaving as an essential alternative revenue. Their unique perspective allows TBR to provide a truly ethical product with minimum outside involvement. A photograph of the weavers with each basket enhances the connection between maker and buyer and highlights the transparent supply chain.
