We love how these candles are made by transforming waste cooking oil into an eco-friendly plant based wax, creating a circular use for a material that would otherwise end up in landfill! The brand also donates 5% of their proceeds to the Soil Association :)
Phena London was founded in 2020. The idea was born when founder Patricia started to increasingly think about the pressure the world puts on natural resources.
With a keen interest in sustainability, wellness, and the restaurant industry, Patricia developed her idea to turn waste oil into a luxury product in the form of natural candles, extending its lifecycle and closing the loop on the use of raw materials.
Every year, around 2000 million tonnes of waste are generated through economic activities and households across Europe, with just under 40% going to landfill or not having proper waste management treatment. Of that waste, cooking oil makes up a significant amount, and every litre of used cooking oil that is disposed of improperly can contaminate up to 1 million litres of water, damaging the environment. In addition, much of our economies rely on harvesting natural resources from our already fragile ecosystems, instead of using what’s already in circulation.
Candle Safety: Always burn the candle on a level surface within sight & out of drafts. Keep away & out of reach of children & pets.
For best results, burn for a minimum of two to three hours and no more than four hours at a time. The first time you light your candle, allow the wax to melt across the top so that it reaches the edges of the jar and the surface is liquid. This stage is important, as natural wax has a ‘memory’, and this ensures that the candle burns evenly and does not tunnel. Each time you light your candle, make sure the wick is trimmed to 1/2 cm.
When your candle has finished burning it will leave roughly 1cm of wax at the bottom of the jar. This is normal, and you still get the same burn time. It is a safety feature to prevent the glass jar from cracking, so don’t relight the candle once it’s reached that level.
Natural candles have no booster chemicals so need some time to spread their scent. To receive the full aromatherapy benefits of the candle, we recommend burning in enclosed spaces.
Make sure you keep the candle out of direct sunlight and stored at room temperature to avoid the wax melting when it’s not lit.
Be safe and enjoy your new scented candle.
